Installing Cat Door in a Hollow Core Door

We commonly have cat doors in the interior of the home, it is in hollow core doors which are made of two wood veneers held apart by a frame, and then it will be creating a door with a hollow center. First, you need to prepare the tools and materials needed, such as cat or pet door, drill with 1/4 inch bit, jig or saber saw, 1 inch thick board, table saw, and 1/2 inch wood screws.

Second, you can start cutting the door opening on one side of the hollow core door by marking the door opening using the template supplied with the cat door. After that, you can drill 1/4 inch holes at each corner and cut between them with a jig or saber saw.

Third, you can then drill the holes through the veneer of the opposite side of the hollow core door. You can do it right from the inside by aligning the corners with the corners of the first cut. Then you can cut between the holes with a jig or saber saw from the outside of the door.

Fourth, you can measure the gap between the veneers of the hollow core door by ripping, cutting lengthwise on a table saw, a piece of wood to this exact width.

Fifth, after that you can start cutting the ripped board into four pieces using two equal to the height of the pet door opening and then another two equal to the width of the cat door opening. Then you can place the pieces between veneers of the hollow core door and install the cat door in the opening according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
